Settlement Services in Nova Scotia 

When you have arrived in Nova Scotia to begin your studies, several organizations can help you and any family members you may have settle into your new home. These organizations understand the challenges of arriving in a location where you may not know anyone or your way around and are equipped to help provide the support you need to succeed in Nova Scotia.  

Please view the list and descriptions of some available support services for new Nova Scotians.  

ISANS 

  • ISANS is the leading immigrant settlement service agency in Atlantic Canada that provides newcomers with assistance with daily life in Nova Scotia, finding a job, preparing for the citizenship test (if applicable), finding or becoming a mentor to a newcomer, services for refugees, language training (general), job-specific language training, service for women, seniors, and youth.

YMCA 

  • YMCA is a multi-service organization committed to building healthy communities that provide newcomers with assistance with daily life in Nova Scotia, finding a job, preparing for the citizenship test (if applicable), finding or becoming a mentor to a newcomer, services for refugees, language training, services for women, seniors, youth, and LGBTQ2S+.

Cape Breton Island Centre for Immigration (CBICI) 

  • Cape Breton Island Centre for Immigration (CBICI) works to support, connect, and meet the needs of newcomers to ensure their successful settlement in Cape Breton. CBICI offers assistance with healthcare registration, driver’s licences, school and recreation registration, language training, financial advice, community engagement, employment, international student opportunities, and more.

Immigration Francophone Nouvelle-Écosse 

  • Immigration Francophone Nouvelle-Écosse aims to help integrate Francophone newcomers in the province and within the Acadian and Francophone community by providing settlement support, community connection, job search assistance, and more. 

Antigonish Women’s Centre & Sexual Assault Services 

  • Antigonish Women’s Centre & Sexual Assault Services is an organization that strives to lower and remove societal barriers to be more inclusive and accessible to the diversity of people and communities. Their immigrant support program coordinator offers services such as settlement planning, settlement navigation, housing, schooling, and employment support; language support; referrals to supportive agencies; and networking and social engagement support to immigrants, refugees, and their families living within Antigonish and Guysborough counties. 

Learn English Nova Scotia Testing and Counselling Centre 

  • Learn English Nova Scotia Testing and Counselling Centre is a licensed Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) language assessment centre that uses the Canadian Language Benchmarks to provide assessment and language education counselling and referrals.

MetroWorks 

  • MetroWorks is a non-profit organization that supports individuals looking for employment and provides work programs to provide experience to help overcome the barriers to employment.
